In line with what I said in the Assistants Section. We will have a more in-depth discussion on each of the 25 core disciplines an assistant should have. These apply not only if you work as an assistant, or if you’re an entrepreneur but to anything you do in general. With so many career opportunities out there, merely having these qualities can put you ahead of other applicants, entrepreneurs, etc.
I’ve always talked about how attitude can either help you keep or lose your job no matter how skillful you are. Your attitude has a big impact on your actions, which means if you’re frowning while working, people will interpret that as if you’re not enjoying your work. So you have to make it a habit; always have a positive attitude no matter what you do or anytime you’re interacting with other people. When you smile and act with positivity while engaging with others, they can feel and see that, causing them to return the smile and treat you the same way. The same goes when you’re being negative, people will mirror that and they will not want to be around you. Any energy you expend will return to you in the same form.
Furthermore, if you’re associating with people with negative attitudes, you need to get away from them as fast as possible because negativity is like a disease, it is contagious, and it spreads. More often than not, they’ll bring you down than you will bring them down. Negative people are so entrenched in their beliefs that everything is bad or that the world’s out to get them. They have so much to change. Therefore, if you even have a glimmer of hope that you want a better life, one way to know you’re on the right track is by immediately adopting a positive attitude. That implies that you have a chance to get through any awful circumstances and that you have the chance to become enormously successful.
However, your only chance in accomplishing this is by keeping yourself from these negative people. I understand that a lot of times, those people are part of your family and/or friends, regardless, you have to separate yourself and be around them less and less if they’re only going to be negative. You must be stronger than they are and stick to your conviction to be positive no matter what. Shelter yourself from the negativity whenever you have to be around them. Try your best not to listen to that negativity in order to minimize the damage as much as possible. I’m not saying move away from your family, what I meant is minimize the time you spend with them. Whenever they start to speak negatively, go to another room, or go somewhere else. Don’t let yourself be a part of that and don’t let that get into your head, remember, garbage in, garbage out. You don’t treasure your garbage, do you? You throw it out because it’s of no use to you.
It’s not only associating with negative family members or friends that can affect your attitude but pretty much everything within your environment as well can affect your thoughts, beliefs, mood, and attitude. For instance, what are you watching on TV? What are you listening to on the radio? What are you watching on YouTube? What are you seeing on TikTok, Facebook, and other social media platforms? Are these things helping you to stay positive and motivated to work on achieving your goals? What educational programs have you listened to? What spiritual programs have you listened to? What are you doing to improve your life? What investment are you making in yourself? All of these things play a role in what’s going into your mind, your attitude, your outlook in life as a whole, or your confidence in everything you do.
When someone says, “I’ll try”, they’re excusing failure in advance. What they’re basically saying is,” I’m going to fail.” “I’m not going to accomplish this.” You’ve got to get that out of your vocabulary. That is a loser’s vocabulary, a loser’s attitude. Quit saying I’ll try, start saying you can. Your attitude is driven by your thoughts so when you think negatively, that’s what you’re going to bring about.
Let’s talk about attitude at work. By attitude, I don’t only mean a positive attitude, but learning to change any negative attitude that is hindering your success. For instance, one of the things I laugh about the most is when it comes to the “let’s ride the clock” attitude or the, “I’ll do just enough not to get fired” attitude of some construction workers. The work ethics of some of these people are downright laughable and reflects their attitude toward everything in life. Remember, I said, “some”, not all construction workers. Some, have a, “I could care less” attitude. In their mind, they think, “What does it matter, my Boss is rich”? This negative attitude only hurts the worker with the negative attitude and his/her poor innocent family as well as everything and everyone in their life. Eventually, no one’s going to hire these people once their reputation is known. They will always be moving around looking for work jumping from job to job. Just to clarify, there are some really hard construction workers and I have 4 who have worked for me on and off for more than twenty years. Nonetheless, anyone who has overseen any construction work, including everyone who has ever passed by a construction project, has witnessed 20% of the workers doing all of the work and 80% of the rest just standing around.
Another thing that’s just really funny about watching the work ethics of some construction crews is, how they never adjust their break schedules during the rainy season. Let’s say for example, the crew is supposed to start to work at 7 am, and then at 9, it rains and continues to rain until 11:45. As soon as it starts to rain, they’ll stop working and will just sit under a shelter, and then they may go back to work when the rain stops but just for a couple of minutes but when the clock strikes 12:00, they do not waste one minute to get to their lunch break. Even though they’ve already been on break for 2 hours and 45 minutes. Then once again, when it rains in the afternoon and they’re back from lunch, they won’t work until the rain stops which is around 2:30. Now, their Merienda is at 3:00, guess what, they will stop working again, and go have their Merienda. This shows their mentality when it comes to their conviction, their work, and achieving excellence in their life. It only affects the person who’s paying them temporarily, but it affects themselves for their entire life. Whenever they have this attitude toward work, they will carry this attitude toward their lives, businesses, children, and families. This attitude is not just when they’re working for someone else. This attitude applies to every aspect of their lives. They’re going to have to change their attitude if they’re ever going to be successful. The four guys I mentioned earlier always have something to do under a shelter while their waiting for the rain to stop. These guys, are winners and that is why they work on all of my construction projects.
Most Filipinos want to own their own business and when you’re an entrepreneur you must remember your brand and reputation are both affected greatly by your and your employees’ attitudes. Remember, if you treat somebody wrong or they get bad customer service, or you have a negative impact on somebody’s life, they are going to tell 10 people about it. If you do the very best job in the world, people are only going to tell maybe one or two people about it. People always remember the negative far more than they ever remember the positive. So, it’s imperative that you’re ten times nicer, ten times better at customer service, ten times better at everything that you do. So that instead of having ten people saying negative things about you, you have 20 people or a minimum of 10 people saying great things about you. This is a fact. The statistics prove this.
Let me give you a scenario, you’re managing a sari-sari store but then you’re unpleasant to be around, or you don’t accommodate your customers properly. Across from you is another sari-sari store, however, the owner is very accommodating, he/she gives better service, and is nicer to be around. Which sari-sari store do you think customers rush to? Yours? Or the one across from you? Of course, they will absolutely choose the owner who gives better service. All of this goes back to attitude. Attitude of gratitude. If you have a business, be grateful that you have that business. If you have customers, be grateful that you have those customers, and give them good service. When you do this, you’re going to be enormously successful in business.
I personally place attitude high on my matrix for scoring applicants next to desire as to whether or not I want to work with them. I place attitude above education, age, work experience, technical skills, and just about everything else. I know my team and I can teach anyone with the right attitude anything I need them to do but we can’t teach attitude. We have tried numerous times with workers who had tremendous talent and strong work ethics but disappointingly had poor attitudes and therefore had to be dismissed. It hurt us more than the dismissed employees because their work contribution was valued and respected. Nonetheless, they just brought too much negativity to our environment which affected the culture of our workplace.
To summarize, your attitude affects everything like how you interact with other people, how you contribute to the culture of your workplace, and how you carry out your daily tasks and responsibilities. Eventually, your attitude will determine how successful and happy you will be. This is not hogwash. It has been proven that 80% of your success is depending on your attitude as opposed to your aptitude or your educational attainment in the real world. As an employee, your coworkers will love and enjoy working with you, and your employer won’t ever consider terminating you since they regard you as a valuable asset to the business. As an entrepreneur, your customers will be loyal to you, they will recommend your business to their friends, and eventually, their friends will refer you to their other friends. As a friend, everybody will want to befriend you, everybody will want to hang out with you. In short, everybody will aspire to be like you.
The best place to start changing your attitude is by adopting an attitude of gratitude. Be thankful for all you have, and know that our creator will always provide for us as long as we do the work. He has given us the land, the seeds, the sun and the water, all we have to do is plant the seeds, cultivate the crop and reap the rewards from the harvest. There are four seasons and no one will ever change that. There is always going to be winter where nothing seems to grow, but just remember just as sure as winter came, so with the spring, so use your winters for preparation for the spring, work through your summers and reap the many rewards of your harvest in the fall. Have faith, harvest time is coming, and with the right attitude, you will learn to love each season because now you know that they are all necessary and best of all, they all lead you to harvest time.
“Belief systems is a set of principles, ideas, or convictions which together form a tenable thesis, working ethos, or presiding ideology; esp. a religion or philosophy, etc.”
-Oxford English Dictionary
Let me start this section with a great story about belief systems, about whether you believe you can do it or if you don’t believe you can do it.
There was a little boy who saw a caravan of trucks and stuff coming to his small town. He asked his mother, “Mom, Mom, look at this.” “What is going on?” His mom answered, “Oh, son, it’s just the circus coming to town.” Now, the kid had never seen a circus, hence, he was enamored with the idea of a circus. So he said, “Mom, can I sit outside and watch?” And his mom said, “Yes, but make sure you stay at the house and don’t go down there because circus people are known to be a little sketchy.” He agreed. He sits down there and while watching, he sees this golden door from this truck open up. He sees this man walking this huge, gigantic elephant out the back of the truck. And the kid was just amazed because he had never seen an elephant before. Furthermore, he sees this man with this little stick and is tapping the elephant on the side of the head or on the leg getting him to do all these different things. Picking up steel rafters, steel poles, and huge bundles of canvas which would eventually erect this huge circus tent. All of which weighed thousands and thousands of pounds. After the circus tents were all set up, the trainer came back to the truck. And instead of loading the elephant back into the truck, he grabbed a rope and tied one end to the elephant’s leg, tied the other end to a small stick, and then started pounding the stick into the ground. The kid just couldn’t believe that this was going to hold this massive animal that he had just witnessed carry all of these huge steel beams and steel poles and everything to erect this circus tent. So he ran down there with all of his gusto and said, “Sir.” The trainer looked up, stood erect, and said, “Son, what’s wrong?” The kid said, “Sir, I just witnessed you all day having this elephant carry all these materials and putting up this tent. And he is so strong, he could easily break that rope, and he could get loose in the community. It could be dangerous.” The trainer bent down on his knee and looked the little boy in the eye and said, “Well, son, you’re absolutely right. He could, theoretically, easily remove that stick. But, son, the difference is he doesn’t believe he can. The reason why is, since he was a little bitty baby elephant, I have put this rope on him and I have tied him to a stick. And in the beginning, he tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and could not move the stick. And eventually, one day he gave up trying. And now he has it in his head and it’ll be there the rest of his life, that he can’t do it. He gave up.”
This story reminds me of a lot of people who will try something once or twice and then they’ll give up. You can’t do this. In life, the greatest baseball players in the world only get a hit three out of ten times at best. The average salesperson has to ask for the sale a minimum of five, six, or seven times before they close the sale. Not giving up is what separates the losers from the winners. Winners, when they believe something, they stay with it, they believe they can do it. They don’t get it in their head that they can’t do it. Because if you believe you can, or if you believe you can’t, either way, you’re right. Because the only thing that matters is what you believe. If you believe you can, you can. But if you believe you can’t, you can’t. So always believe that you can. You can accomplish anything and you can do it.
Your perspective of reality is shaped by your beliefs, which have an impact on all facets of your existence. In essence, the beliefs we hold affect how we live. Those beliefs may have been embedded from childhood, developed from past experiences, and sometimes from beliefs that are fully unsubstantiated.
Some beliefs should not be mindlessly accepted or disregarded. Be open-minded and conduct thorough research, and find concrete evidence to determine whether those beliefs are essential or destructive. Most often, people are so against doing anything that could possibly transgress or oppose their core beliefs. However, they failed to scrutinize or investigate if those beliefs are accurate or if they benefit from them. You can’t just simply believe anything you hear or see just because you grew up with it, the majority believes in it, or because people told you to believe them so. Always inspect any belief you come across, find a reason why you must believe it, or find out why it’s of no use to you.
Here are the three categories of core beliefs:
People are easily convinced through advertisements that emphasize the idea that buying this certain product will bring you happiness, prosperity, fulfillment, or social acceptance. They inadvertently purchase those items right away without considering whether they are making the right choice.
Another advertising belief that people have internalized is popularity or social status. Are they genuinely consistent with personal values and backed by factual evidence? Or have they been passed down from earlier generations or engrained in our minds by influencing advertisers? It is crucial to assess these beliefs in light of facts, knowledge, and personal experience. By constantly examining and reevaluating our beliefs, we empower ourselves to make informed decisions rather than being swayed only by the promises and pictures given in commercials. Advertisements frequently link the use of particular products to a desirable lifestyle, giving people the impression that having these products will elevate their social standing. However, genuine connections, shared beliefs, and human traits matter more than merely relying on outside symbols or brands when it comes to popularity and acceptability. Hence, it is crucial to question these beliefs and examine their foundations.
One more example is when it comes to politics: both sides want you to develop strong emotional core convictions regarding the opposing party’s traits and goals so that you always vote for their party. Some Democrats want people to think that all Republicans are heartless and only care about money. Some Republicans want you to think that Democrats are all about big government and handouts. When it comes to the support of any party, neither of these stereotypes is necessarily accurate, even though some politicians attempt to sway your opinions through their narrative (advertising). Keep in mind, when they use hyperbole and propaganda to shape your beliefs to reflect theirs, they only do so in an attempt to get you to vote for them. Just like a good marketer does, politicians are getting you to accept these beliefs so they can sell you something, their agenda which is to get your votes. Thus, make sure that your beliefs are fully backed by concrete evidence, education, and your own experience.
I do acknowledge how your parents did the best they could with the tools they had however, their negative beliefs shouldn’t have been passed down. Despite the fact that people around you may have reinforced these beliefs throughout your childhood and possibly even into adulthood, they should have not been your beliefs. Nonetheless, you still have the chance to alter those beliefs by changing what goes into your mind starting today, that is, if you want to change. With the appropriate mindset, education, and drive, anyone can become anything they want no matter what their social-economic standing is, their race, the level of formal education they have attained, who their parents are, what their sex is, what their religion is, etc. Everything is possible. Make a list of your own beliefs and make sure they are in line with your aspirations, morals, and aims in life.
Think about those beliefs that are currently affecting your life. What are your beliefs about business owners, salespeople, marketing staff, management staff, customers, relationships, education, career choice, past, present, and future? Are these beliefs serving or hurting your career goals? Are these beliefs nourishing or destructive? It is important why you need to ask yourself these questions because all of these beliefs are going to affect the way you lead your life. Once you have fully understood how your belief system works, compare your beliefs to your life goals e.g., family and finances, and make sure that they are aligned.
One belief I come across often in the Philippines is when I post an ad for employment opportunities. We often get, “Is this a scam?”, or “How do I know this is not a scam?” First of all, I doubt if someone was scamming you, they would reply, “Sayang, you caught me, yap, this is a scam.” Second, if you believe every opportunity is a scam you will never see the enormous opportunities available to you if you just take a risk sometimes. No one ever got rich by playing it safe and no one will ever get rich if they believe every opportunity is a scam.
You might be wondering why people are unsuccessful. It’s because their beliefs and their lifestyle don’t align. This causes them to make terrible decisions as well as undesirable life choices, which in turn will produce an undesired result. People say, “Oh, they are set in their ways, they will never change,” and that is because they have that belief ingrained in their core and therefore, they fail to acquire the tools to change. It’s like when you’re managing a business, you can’t simply keep on using the same system on and on without modifying it. You should always be innovating, you should always be thinking of ways to get ahead of your competitors. You can’t create a system and rely on it for the rest of your career; without constant innovation and creative thinking, you’ll most likely go bankrupt. Sure, when you used that system the first time, you’ve done so well. But the world is changing, and so is your clientele, and as they change, so are their preferences which you will then have to cater to, which also means that you have to use a fresh approach. Some entrepreneurs struggle because they were so ingrained with their core beliefs, they don’t realize the change. They were petrified by fear, they don’t want to change when all they have to do is change their perspectives and further their education.
A belief you must keep in mind is everyone can succeed if they have the right education and perseverance―all that matters is that you are motivated to alter the beliefs that are preventing you from accomplishing your goals. I’m not saying you should go back and enroll in a university, rather, you can be self-educated in the field that you are most interested in. Just browse through the internet and you’ll see a lot of updated and proven resources to further your education. The great thing about self-education is that you will be able to advance your education in a fast-paced manner because you can choose to just study those subjects you need to achieve your goals. In contrast to college, self-education has no set time limit (semester requirements), so you can study any subject as long as you want and until you feel you understand the material completely.
Change your beliefs and you can change your life!
Everyone should be familiar with two types of laws: the laws of society and the laws of nature. The laws of society are instilled to you from an early age. Society expects you to comprehend and obey these laws. There are also the laws of nature. The laws of nature are designed to benefit us and can be used as instruments to help us throughout our lives, just like the laws of society. Unfortunately, we are not often taught the laws of nature while we are young, and even more regrettably, most people don’t learn these laws until it is too late. The good news is that similar to what an application does in the operating system of your home computer, they are already integrated inside each and every one of us. In actuality, the brain is frequently described as nature’s computer. All we need to do is learn how to use these laws (tools) for our benefit and refrain from utilizing them to our detriment because laws of nature occur organically and naturally.
The law of attraction is one of these laws. Negative thoughts result in negative experiences, whereas positive thoughts produce positive ones. Simply put, what you focus on the most becomes who or what you are. This is an unbreakable law of nature.
The way you think determines everything you are and will become. If you want to change the quality of your life, you have to change the quality of your decisions, which begins with the quality of thought. Most people prefer to ignore things that they perceive to be challenging or uncomfortable. A powerful mind absorbs things that have possibilities, no matter how tough they are, and then analyzes the thought in such a way that you believe, it is truly possible. One of my favorite sayings is, “If you can conceive it, and you believe it, you can achieve it!”
Your thoughts and your mind are the only things that you completely control. The first step to success is to practice self-discipline and learn to master your mind. A focused mind is essential for achieving any goal. You must be able to concentrate primarily on your goals. This is a remarkably potent tool that you have total control over and that sits on top of your neck every day.
Just think of how happy you would be if you simply expected that everything would turn out perfectly and in your favor. That everything was in line with your objectives, your ideas, and your expectations. It is entirely up to you to ensure that your expectations are in line with your objectives and the things you want to achieve. Always keep in mind that one of the greatest powers in the law of nature is likely the power of positive expectancy.
Positive aspirations must be combined with hard work. You must add more value to a company if you want to be treated more favorably there. You have to establish your value so highly that no owner could possibly turn to anyone else, except you, in order to expand their company. This is known as becoming indispensable.
Everyone has 168 hours in a week; if you take out the eight hours for sleep, that is 56 hours per week, and then deduct the eight hours most people commit to their employment, which corresponds to 40 hours per week, you have 72 discretionary hours to do and think anything you want.
By broadening your knowledge a little bit every day, you’ll improve a little bit each day and your education will build upon itself. Consider the individuals who work in an industry that are making P500,000 a year and then compare them to the people making P50,000 per year; do you truly believe that they are ten times smarter, ten times better educated, ten times better workers and that they are exerting ten times as much effort as the lower paid employees? No, of course not. They devote a bit more of their time, work a little smarter, study a little more, work a little harder—it’s the extra…effort that makes the difference. The only distinction between ordinary and extraordinary is the word “extra”.
You will always be compensated in exact proportion to the value you provide to the business. You are being paid exactly what you’re worth. If you want to earn more, you have to learn more—you have to provide more value. You’re earning exactly what you should be earning in accordance with the value you provide.
Through your mind, you have the power to alter anything in your life. You have the ability to change your attitude, your health, your wealth, your status, and your future. If you’re feeling down one day, just remember the good things in your life. Thinking about all the things I have to be grateful for is one of my favorite morning rituals. A person who is thankful can never be sad.
All other aspects of your life may be managed by simply learning how to regulate your thoughts, including all of your moods. If you want to be happy, think pleasant thoughts, concentrate on the good things in life, focus on a happy future, and think about your happy family. It will become a reality if you think about it, believe in it, and put enough emotional energy into it.
Eliminate self-limiting thoughts from your mind. Consider yourself successful. Expect to be liked. Expect to succeed in your endeavors. Learn to use the resources provided by nature and you will see your business and profession thrive.
As a business person, time is the most valuable resource you will ever possess. Unfortunately, time will never be abundant, which is why you must develop good time management skills. You must look at your day as a whole and then start chunking it down into bite-size pieces. The old question, “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer of course is, “One bite at a time”, which applies perfectly when it comes to time management. Chunk your day into bite-size pieces allocating just enough time for each item on your to-do list for the day.
While there is never enough time to accomplish everything, there is always time to complete the things that are most essential. It comes down to setting priorities. What is your top priority? Is advancing your career and running a successful business the most important thing you can do with your time to support your family, your job, and yourself? If so, you should spend a significant amount of time each day engaging in activities that will help you achieve your objectives.
Effective time management is essential for success. You have to consider both the short-term and long-term ramifications of your decisions regarding how to use or allocate your time. Everyone is aware that time is money, and how professionals like attorneys bill their clients for their time is a wonderful way to emphasize this. Most attorneys bill their time in blocks of 10 minutes. If you only need 3 minutes, you are still billed for 10 minutes. If you need 11 minutes, you are billed for 20 minutes because you have now entered into a new block of time. When it comes to time, you must develop a sense of urgency because if you don’t, you will lose that time forever.
Start by scheduling the tasks, appointments, calls, and so forth that you are putting off and are not looking forward to but which you are aware are essential to your success. People think “Oh, I can do it tomorrow”. You should get rid of that so-called, “Mañana Habit”. “There is no tomorrow!” as Sylvester Stallone says in one of his Rocky movies and “Tomorrow never comes” as Garth Brooks sings in one of his hit songs. People want to put off doing things till tomorrow because they believe they won’t need to do it at all, which is ludicrous. The earlier you do it, the sooner it will be off your desk and you’ll be more successful.
Everyone needs to be conscious of the fact that their time management decisions will have a ripple effect. If a person chooses to put his or her feet up on the desk and surf the internet for two, three, or four hours a day rather than making calls, sending emails, distributing flyers, calling businesses, or simply studying an educational program, he or she is essentially choosing failure over success.
Remember, when you’re socializing, especially at work, that time has to come from someplace and could have been spent on anything. You will never get that time back when you divert it from more beneficial tasks, like interacting with potential clients. There are only 24 hours in a day. We all have 168 hours a week, it’s a matter of how you allocate that time that’s going to determine your success or lack thereof.
I frequently hear businesses, managers, and employees grumble about the long hours they are required to work. One of the things I try to emphasize to them is that it is not the quantity of time spent at work that is important; it is the quality of time spent at work. One of my favorite sayings is, “Don’t confuse motion for momentum.” Simply being busy at work does not constitute quality time spent on a significant job or work that contributes to the bottom line. Learning time management skills will provide you the time you need to grow the business, which is ultimately all that matters because growing the business, benefits not only your salary, all of the employees’ salaries, the employers’ profit, the owners’ family’s lifestyle, but everyone.
You must learn to manage your time effectively. You need to prioritize what’s most important to you. Although I concentrated on time management at work in this lesson, managing your personal time is just as crucial if you want to thrive in all aspects of your life, including the quality of time you spend with your family.
After they graduate from college, the majority of people cease developing personally. They stop reading, learning from sources besides professional journals, or doing the things they love and do for fun. You must give learning a top priority for both your professional and personal development. You must regularly sharpen your tools in your chosen field or industry. Allocate your time wisely and eliminate distractions in your life that are preventing you from achieving your goals. You can build the future you desire if you learn how to manage your time.
What has gone through your head has made you who and where you are today. The same holds true for time. You are where you are because of the way you’ve decided to spend your time. Make good decisions, invest in your education, understand how to expand the business, and set aside time each day to do just that—grow your company through effective time management.
